(Genesis 29:16-35)
“Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah.” Gen 29:30a
As you read the story of Leah, you find her described as having weak, tender eyes, which could mean they were light blue, crossed or even bulging when you look at definitions. The verse that stands out first is that Jacob loved Rachel more.
There are several points to note about Rachel and Leah:
1. Jacob was tricked into marrying Leah.
2. The Lord saw Leah was unloved and blessed her to have children first.
3. Rachel took her father's idols.
4. Rachel died first.
5. Leah was buried next to Jacob, not Rachel.
6. Leah had a child in the direct line of Christ.
We, as women, look for love in the wrong places. We also don’t realize we are the blessed one, because we are too busy looking at other women.
We think if we do things for a man, i.e. (1) he will care for me more (2) he'll think I’m pretty (3) I’ll do “it” this one time and maybe he will like me more.
Stop seeking to get fulfilled by him and SEEK God first. I was listening to a DVD yesterday by Priscilla Shirer and she said, “If you are single and unhappy, getting married or finding a man is not going to change that unhappiness. You have to be happy, single and develop your relationship with God first. If you think getting married or finding a man is your source of happiness, BEWARE!”
Unfortunately, Leah had to marry a man that didn’t choose her, love her, or want her...total REJECTION!
Note what Leah said after each child (Gen. 29:31-35)
“Now the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, and He opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.” Leah conceived and bore sons, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah:
1. “Because the LORD has seen my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.”
2. Then she conceived again and bore a son and said, “Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.”
3. “Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.”
First, notice that God saw her affliction! The Almighty God knows! He cares! He saw her broken heart. Secondly, she didn’t point her attention to God until she had the fourth child, Judah and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” Thirdly, You see her turn from this man, Jacob, to her God!
Ladies, whatever your “this time” is, it’s time to praise the Lord. Stop trying to get fulfilled by a man, a job, an individual in your life you are trying to please. Start praising God, and realize YOU are complete in Him. Then, watch the blessings come.
“Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.” Proverbs 31:30
