Women of the Bible: The Syro-Phoenician Woman

Writer: Mary ThomasMary Thomas

(Please read: Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30)

Her description:

1. Matthew called her “a woman of Canaan,”

2. Mark called her “a Greek.”

3. She was a heathen woman, or Gentile, a descendant of the old Canaanite worshipers of Baal.

4.She is a mother suffering with grief because of the demoniac affliction of her daughter.

5.She was determined to get relief for her child.

Her Appeal:

1. “Have mercy upon me.”

2. Her Recognition: “O Lord, Thou Son of God.” She recognized the authority and deity of Jesus.

3. Her Statement: “My daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.” Mark says she had an “unclean spirit.”

The Response?

1. Silence, “He answered her not a word.”

2.Disciples told him to send her away for bothering them. Now, this was funny to me because she was not addressing the disciples! Her plea was to Jesus.

3.Jesus told her He was only sent for the “lost sheep of Israel”, the Jews.

4.She came again, but bowed down, and said, “Lord help me”!” You see when our children hurt, we hurt. You see this in her cry to him.

5.He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” But she said, “Yes, Lord; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

She did not let the words of Jesus, Himself, stop her from what she desired, to see, her child whole. She didn’t ask for the bread to be buttered, toasted, wheat or rye. She didn’t ask for a whole loaf or a piece. She asked for a crumb.

A crumb from Jesus Christ is more than enough!

Remember His words, “If you have the faith of a mustard seed”? Well, her faith was acknowledged out of “her time”. Her faith prevailed. The mercy of Jesus went beyond racial walls. He healed her child!

“ Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed at once.” Matt. 15:28

The gospel of Mark tells us more, “Because of this answer go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” And going back to her home, she found the child lying on the bed, the demon having left.” Mark 7:29-30

Jesus didn’t even have to go to the house where the daughter was. He spoke, and it was done!

Reading this story built my faith up! I praise God for the word that says, “the righteousness of God is revealed to us from faith to faith”! Romans 1:17
